Masters with a Twist

This exhibition was an open call for entries in the Peace County area. The concept behind this exhibition was to emulate or otherwise somehow incorporate a historic artists’s work into a new piece.

My choosen artist from history was Alphonse Mucha. I have always been intrigued by his illustrations and the use of warm and rich colors. It reflects the Art Nouveau movement with a sprinkle of Victorian. His illustration for the publication issue Salons Des Cent was the one that caught my attention for the purpose of creating a coded letter addressed to the viewer. The piercing gaze of the woman in the original Mucha illustration had caught my attention and I used that same gaze and pose in this painting.
